Day 1 - Monday, August 27th

WE ARE HOME!! (Well, home away from home at least)!!

Our flights were great - they seemed longer than last year but they were pretty smooth which is always a good thing!! On our decent we were greeted by beautiful mountains that were still snow capped but melting to form reflective blue/green ponds and lakes on top of these high altitude mountains. We could even spot a Glacier through the clouds (see picture).

We arrived in Anchorage right on time - around 2pm Alaska time (6pm Eastern time). While driving around we both noted the lack of snow on the mountains - around Anchorage we are lucky to see little spots near the tops of the mountains and while we cannot doubt the beauty of God's creation no matter what season it is - we both agree that we enjoyed the snow covered mountains more.

We couldn't check into the hotel until 4pm so we headed for our favorite Alaskan restaurant... Moose's Tooth. They didn't disappoint - it was yet again the BEST pizza that I have ever had!!

Being the "stuck in a rut" kind of person that I am I had to get the Cajun Rockfish pizza again but they also had a Halibut pizza on special so I got a 1/2 and 1/2! For anyone who may be thinking "fish on pizza... yuck"... don't knock it til you try it!! These two "unique Alaskan pizzas" are amazing!!

Jason got a medium pizza that could feed three people - 1/2 of a chicken with barbeque sauce and other toppings and a 1/2 of a chirizo with a spinach/ricotta sauce - he loved both!!

After dinner we made our way to the hotel to check in and settled in a bit before heading a few blocks downtown to do so wandering, window shopping and just enjoying how different the city looks this year. Last year there was still snow piled up in areas - the roads and sidewalks were still covered in road salt/sand, etc. This year? It's flowers - beautiful, healthy and colorful flowers are EVERYWHERE!!

After wandering around downtown for a while we were both starting to really feel sleepy from all the travel (we had been up since 4:30am Eastern Time) so we headed back to the hotel for a nap - with alarms set to wake us up in time to head to the coast and enjoy the sunset!! While we were there the train came through a few times for some photo ops!!

The combination of clouds and mountains provided a beautiful backdrop for the sunset - and given the fact that they have had a lot of rain lately the trail/park was filled with locals and tourists alike enjoying this beautiful sunset. No matter where I am - there is something about a sunset that is just absolutely awe-inspiring and breath-taking.

Well it is now 10:36 Alaska time which means it is 2:36am in Virginia so I am having a hard time keeping my eyes open - and Jason is already asleep so that doesn't help either!!

Tomorrow's plans = breakfast and coffee-to-go from Snow City Cafe and then walking/hiking/exploring some of the trails in and around the Chugach National Park. Animals likely found tomorrow = bears, moose, beluga whales.

Thanks everyone for you prayers - check back in tomorrow night!!
